Navitas Solar has officially raised a substantial investment of up to $20 million (approximately ₹190 crore) as growth capital from responsAbility. This significant financial investment is geared towards enabling the company’s transition to solar cell production and is slated to finance a proposed solar cell plant of 2.2 GW in Gujarat. The investment has been made through responsAbility’s dedicated Climate Fund for Asia, where the investment was designed as a quasi-equity, blending debt and equity. The secured capital will be used exclusively for capital expenditures for the establishment of the proposed manufacturing plant, according to the company’s disclosures.
Scope of the Gujarat facility and strategic shift
The Gujarat solar manufacturing plant, which will have a capacity of 2.2 GW, is a key addition to Navitas Solar’s overall corporate strategy to gain deeper backward integration in the domestic solar manufacturing value chain. The estimated total capital cost of the entire solar cell project is ₹1,000 crore.
Vineet Mittal, director, finance and strategy at Navitas Solar, said ₹125 crore has already been disbursed successfully and the remaining amount is scheduled to be released in the coming three to four months. The move into solar cell manufacturing is a strategic one aimed at improving the resilience of the domestic supply chain and driving local value addition in India’s renewable energy industry.
Broader industry context and technological capabilities
Navitas Solar is a fully integrated renewable energy business established in 2013 and based in Surat, Gujarat, India, with manufacturing facility for solar modules, encapsulants, engineering, procurement, construction, battery energy storage, and renewable power generation.
The company currently produces Mono PERC and high-efficiency N-type TOPCon solar modules ranging from 40 Wp to 720 Wp, is serving customers in India and has also explored market opportunities overseas. In order to strengthen its technological capabilities, Navitas is actively developing high-efficiency TOPCon and perovskite-TOPCon hybrid tandem modules in cooperation with Caelux.
Mumbai-based Centrum Capital’s Infrastructure Advisory business served as a sole financial adviser to Navitas Solar. The investment from responsAbility marks a strong alignment with the mandate of their Asia Climate Fund, which focuses on low-carbon, high-impact climate solutions from the private sector in markets with high growth potential.
Strategic investments in backward integration projects like Navitas Solar’s cell plant continue to be pivotal in India’s green transition, especially as the country strives to bolster its clean energy manufacturing capabilities and diminish reliance on imported components.
Conclusion
Navitas Solar’s securing of ₹190 crore in growth capital from responsAbility represents a game-changing moment for the company as it moves forward with its 2.2 GW solar cell manufacturing operations in Gujarat. The company has already released a substantial sum of ₹125 crore in its initial tranche and is expected to release the remaining funds in the next few months, giving it the financial leverage it needs to advance its backward integration initiative. With advanced module production, high efficiency TOPCon technologies and robust institutional support from a leading European climate fund, Navitas Solar is set to make a meaningful contribution to India’s local renewable energy manufacturing ecosystem.
